CHD Explained in Magical Terms for Children

A Simple Guide for Families and Children

When a child is born with congenital heart disease (CHD), parents and families often hear many big medical words that can feel confusing. One way to understand these terms is to imagine the heart as a magical little engine that helps move oxygen and energy throughout the body.

This guide explains some common CHD terms using simple and magical ideas that families and children can understand.

Open Heart Surgery

Magical Explanation:

Heart surgeons are like builders for the heart. They carefully repair or rebuild parts of the heart so it can work better.

Glenn Surgery

The Glenn surgery helps build a new pathway so blood can travel more easily to the lungs to pick up oxygen.

Think of it like building a new road that helps the heart do its job better.

Fontan Surgery

Magical Explanation:

The Fontan surgery helps finish building the new pathways for blood to travel through the body.

After this surgery, blood can move more smoothly and carry oxygen where it needs to go.

Heart Warriors

Children with CHD are often called heart warriors because they show incredible strength, courage, and resilience while facing heart surgeries and treatments.

Their hearts may be built differently, but they are filled with extraordinary bravery.

At Opal’s Workshop of Love Project, congenital heart disease awareness is deeply personal. Our daughter, Opal May, was born with a severe and complex heart condition. Her story inspires our mission to support families, spread awareness, and bring comfort to children facing similar journeys.

Every heart warrior’s story matters.

And every heart—no matter how it is built—is special. 💗
